Summer is in full swing and it’s time for vacations to destinations near and far. Visit the library to check out different items to help your family pass the time while in the car, van, boat, plane, or even hot air balloon!
There are many books on CD to check out at the library. We also have digital audio books available through the library’s digital resources. Here are just a few of my favorites …
Find out where it all began. Listen to the time travels of Jack and Annie starting with their very first adventure to the time of the dinosaurs, all the way to their eighth trip to the moon! Jack and Annie meet interesting characters, learn new things, and follow clues that help them find their way back to the magical treehouse full of books. Skillfully read by Mary Pope Osborne, the author herself, these books will quickly pass the time in a long car ride.
A classic book read by a classic actress, Charlotte’s Web read by Meryl Streep and a full cast of voice actors, is a joy for the whole family. Wilber, who is “Some Pig”, befriends a small, beautiful spider named Charlotte. She helps him to gain confidence and popularity by spelling words in her web. If you are travelling to a state or county fair, put this audio book on your list.
For middle grade kids who enjoy dystopian novels and magical books, try The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann. Every year in the town of Quill, 13 year old children are separated into categories: Wanted, Necessary, and Unwanted. Alex knows that he has been designated as an Unwanted, meaning certain death, while his twin brother Aaron, has been selected as a Wanted. Little do either of them know what adventures await on the other side in the magical land of Artime, for those who are Unwanted. This is a story that will keep you on the edge of your car seat to the very end.
Don’t forget the Vox Books!!
Vox books are picture books with the audio built right into the book. Just press play and the story is read to younger readers. Here are some of the newer titles.
From the publisher: May isn’t having fun on her trip through Chinatown with her grandfather. Gong Gong doesn’t speak much English, and May can’t understand Chinese. She’s hungry, and bored with Gong Gong’s errands. Plus, it seems like Gong Gong’s friends are making fun of her! But just when May can’t take any more, Gong Gong surprises her with a gift that reveals he’s been paying more attention than she thought.
Let’s admit it … car rides can be long and boring and little ones can get a little grumpy sometimes. Well, this books is sure to bring about laughter from the whole family because what is funnier to children (and some adults) than Butts! Butts are big. Butts are small. They come in all different sizes and shapes and colors and have many different names. Learn about this very important muscle found in humans and animals and bring a little giggle to your travels.
