In this week’s O’Fallon Weekly News & Notes column, Teri Rankin, Youth Services Manager, announced that there will be a celebration in honor of Abe Lincoln’s 209th birthday. Best of all, she said, “This year we decided to invite honest Abe to the library, and to our astonishment and delight, he accepted!”
On February 24, Mr. Lincoln (played by actor Kevin Wood) will be tell stories and recount the history of our 16th President from 3-4 PM in a program called “A New Birth of Freedom.” The celebration begins at 2:30 with birthday cupcakes. Patriotic treat bags will be given to children 12-years-old and under.
Teri announced a new program for 12-15-year-old students who love to draw – Make Your Own Artist Trading Cards (ATC). Facilitated by local artist, Elizabeth Rothera, teens will create their own cards to keep, trade, or give as gifts. ATC will be on the 2nd Saturday of each month through May at 10:30 – 11:30. Be sure and register for this creative event.
Every Monday at 10:30, 3-5-year-olds can enjoy Preschool Story Time. Children explore books and stories, Teri said, as well as engage in additional language, science, and art activities such as the “paint-sicles” the kids created last week – paint frozen in ice cube trays with popsicle stick handles.
Youth Services also invites you to show your love for a sweetheart, friend, or family member by personalizing a paper heart. Teri said the special hearts will be displayed in the children’s area and hopes everyone will “come in and see the love grow.”
Teri also announced the return of Library After Dark with a fun Valentine’s event for couples or singles 21 years and over. Friday, February 9, 2018 – 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, come mingle, kid-free, at the library and enjoy some music, socializing, and light refreshments. Jeremy Wright, local country and Americana singer will be performing an original and cover songs for your listening enjoyment.
And finally, as if February 24 wasn’t fun enough celebrating Honest Abe’s birthday, the Library staff will be sporting fuzzy whiskers all day and giving out fake mustaches to patrons in honor of National Fake Mustache Day. If it’s happening at OFPL, it’s really a thing!
As always, you can check out more Library News & Notes each Wednesday in the O’Fallon Weekly.
