As a lifelong advocate for public libraries, it was a no-brainer for Liz Jennings to get involved at OFPL when she and her husband moved to O’Fallon in 2019.

“I joined the library’s book club, Books & Brew, shortly after moving to O’Fallon,” she said. “I was looking to make connections in the community and quickly found a group of like-minded individuals through this club (which I am still active in). I have always been a passionate advocate for libraries and believe they are essential for strong communities. However, I was blown away by OFPL’s services and staff. I knew that I had to find out more about the leaders that make the library great. I expressed my interest to OFPL director, Ryan Johnson, and hoped for the best!”

Her hope eventually paid off.

“I joined the board in May of 2021. As the only Millennial on the board, I’m able to bring a different generational perspective to the group. OFPL is lucky to have a board of long-serving, dedicated individuals. I hope to continue to ensure that the library is able to fulfill its mission statement: to Serve as a bridge connecting our diverse and ever-evolving community to learning opportunities, resources, and services that place people first.”

In her non-library life, Liz is the Associate Director of the SWIC Foundation, where she fundraises for and administers their scholarship grant. Connecting people with resources is a passion of hers, and she brings that into her work with, and love for, the library.

“When I think about libraries, I think about connection and exploration. Every time I step into OFPL I am able to connect with individuals or organizations who are new to me. Through these connections, I have been able to explore new literary genres, new activities in the community, new technologies, and new ideas. Using the library makes me a better person and I am thankful for a place that expects nothing while giving so much.”

In addition to her work at SWIC and on the library board. Liz is also the mother of a very excited little boy!

“I work full-time, so I don’t often get to bring my son to the storytime activities that are held during the day. However, about a year ago, I had a random Wednesday off and decided to take my son to Book Babies. It was our first time attending and I felt a little intimidated because it seemed like many moms were regular attendees. Elliott was shy that day and didn’t seem to enjoy the class as much as I hoped he would…until Ms. Julie brought out the bubbles. His whole demeanor changed and he became so engaged! At the end of the class we left with a big smile and a playdate with a new friend!”

Understandably, her favorite thing about the library is the Children’s Department.

“My toddler is obsessed with the library because it’s a place where he can play with toys, create art, pick out books, and connect with other kids his age. I love that it’s completely FREE in a space that is clean, safe, and indoors. We play at the library at least twice a week!”

With Liz on the board, we are all in good hands. She really understands that the library is more than just books — it’s a place for everyone.

“The O’Fallon Public Library truly has something for everyone. Under one roof you can make new personal connections, read a good book, entertain your child, pick up a new hobby, use the internet, print a document, submit your passport application, have something notarized, take a yoga class, or simply enjoy some peace and quiet! OFPL is truly a gem in this community. I would love to see everyone find their niche at the library.”
