Molly Scanlan Library Director penned this week’s column in the O’Fallon Weekly and she highlighted the hard working volunteers of AARP who have been helping people complete and file their taxes again this year – free of charge. Last year, they helped over 600 people
“Organized by Mike Day, they receive no compensation for this great service that helps our community members!” Molly said. “We are honored to partner with them and provide the room for this service.”
Molly also gave a special thank-you to the circulation staff who assist by scheduling tax preparation appointments.
AARP Foundation Tax Aide program helps taxpayers with moderate income, with a focus on seniors over 50, Molly said. Appointments are Tuesday – Friday, between 9 AM and 2 PM. As of this writing, the first available appointments are March 22, so Molly recommends calling the Library (618) 632-3783 or stopping by to schedule an appointment soon. Likewise, if you need to cancel, be sure and let us know so someone else can have that time slot.
Remember to bring a Valid Photo ID, Social Security card for yourself and each dependent, last year’s completed Tax Returns, and proof of health insurance to your appointment. For more information on necessary documents, visit the AARP website.
The Library also has a limited number of paper tax forms: 1040, 1040A, AND 1040EZ as well as instruction books and Illinois tax forms. But, Molly said, the IRS is phasing out sending paper forms to Libraries. They can be downloaded online through the IRS website or by calling 1-800-829-3676 to place your order.
The Library Tax Resources Center page has links to common forms to download as well as links to instructions for the 1040, 1040A, AND 1040EZ forms. Here at the Library, the Adult Service department can help you download and/or tax forms for free up to five pages.
Molly reported on other programs at the Library including Abe Lincoln “A New Birth of Freedom” this Saturday, Feb 24. Starting at 2:30 – 3:00 PM, there will be a celebration of his recent birthday with cupcakes and trivia. At 3 PM, Mr. Lincoln (renowned actor Kevin Wood) will tell stories and recount the history of our beloved 16th President. This is best for families with kids in kindergarten and up.
If you’re looking for an opportunity to join a nontraditional book club in a relaxing atmosphere, Molly invites you to the Books & Brew book club, Monday, February 26, at 7 PM at Global Brew. This month’s title is Miss Burma by Charmaine Craig.
As always, you can keep up with all of our events through our website calendar.
