ofallon-weeklyIn this week’s O’Fallon Weekly, Youth Services Manager, Teri Rankin elaborated on the many activities in store for the 8-week Summer Reading Program that begins May 30 for children 2 years old through 8th grade.

1Reading By Design

Reading By Design is the theme of this year’s program and will include many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and STEAM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art,and Mathematics).

Also for younger children, a “Reading Buddies” program is offered this summer as well.  Youth volunteers (7th and 8th graders) will we available on scheduled Mondays and Fridays to listen to children read and tutor them through reading games and manipulatives.

Teri also mentioned some brand new nonfiction series for youth including a Totally Amazing series with titles such as  Totally Amazing Facts About Military Land Vehicles. Also, expect new series on World’s Weirdest Plants, Little Kitchen of Horrors, and Weird America – America’s Oddest….

Naturally, there are adult and teen summer reading challenges as well from June 1 – July 31.  Check out the details and prizes on our website.

Teri also wrote about the Adult Writing Contest the library is hosting this summer.

1 Writing-Contest-LogoEntries may be original poems, essays, or short stories on any theme  and limited to 15 typed pages (double-spaced) or the handwritten equivalent.

Four cash prizes will be awarded:

  • Best Overall Entry: $100
  • Best Short Story: $50
  • Best Poem: $50
  • Best Essay: $50

Note: The winner of “Best overall Entry” is exempt from winning a best in category prize. In that case, the second place entry will win the category prize.

June is audiobook month and we are celebrating with a chance to win a pair of LG Bluetooth Headphones.  Enter anytime in June and tell us why you love listening for a chance to win. One random entry will be drawn at the end of June.
