Employment is an essential part of life in the modern era. If you aren’t retired, you almost certainly need to work to earn money. Of course, employment has many other benefits. It can provide someone with socialization, identity, and positive self-worth. Productivity at work can also promote well-being and help with recovery from a physical or mental illness (Williams, 2018).

Unfortunately, employment is still a problem in our society. In fact, over five million people in the United States are currently jobless (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). Finding a job that fits your skill set and desired pay can be challenging. It can become easy to get discouraged when you have applied for numerous jobs that peak your interest, but you have not received an invitation for an interview.

The one thing that employers will notice first, prior to offering you an interview, is your resume. Providing your employer with your resume is a chance to show off your skills and prior experiences related to the job you are applying for. Because your resume provides the first impression to potential employers, take your time when writing your resume to ensure that it looks pleasing and will spark their interest.

Here are some resume tips:

  1. Make sure that your resume does not exceed two pages in length
  1. Include the last ten years of relevant job experience
  1. List your skills, job experience, education, and any volunteer work
  1. Use action verbs to describe your accomplishments
  1. Avoid using complete sentences
  1. Use bullet points to organize your resume
  1. Only list jobs you have been at for at least a year
  1. Use 12-point font and 1-inch margins when writing your resume
  1. Be honest and ensure all information on your resume is accurate
  1. Use a template to help you create your resume (Google Docs offers free templates).
